Spring is here…..

I am terribly slack at blogging. I just realised that I havent blogged since August. Its is the busiest time for photographers - that is my only excuse.

My kids have been singing a little ditty about Spring that I cannot get out of my head today. "Spring is here, spring is here, how do you think I know? I just saw a bluebird, that is how I know". If you knew the tune, you'd be singing it too. These photos are from one of my first outdoor Spring family sessions.
Happy day to you all. xx

Mums 'n Bubs

Are you pregnant? Do you have a new bubba? If yes, then this post is for you.

I have recently upgraded a lot of my equipment and have now set up a studio in my home exclusively for Mums-to-be and New bubba sessions.

For a combined session fee of $200 you will get 2 portrait sessions. The first one is for you. While you are all glowing and pregnant (or if you are like I was, swollen and sleepy and just a little bit scared. I promise to make you look beautiful) and the second is for bubba when he or she arrives.

You get a beautiful photo or 10 of you while pregnant and then you get to kick back for a few hours in comfort while we take some gorgeous images of your amazing new creation. Because thats what bubs are!

For a limited time, I will also include a complimentary 8x12" print of your choice from either session.

Packages or individual prints or files can be purchased including images from either session.

You can take a squizz at my Newborn Gallery here and then just email me or Contact Me through the website form to request a time.

Happy Weekend everyone. x

My mothers day mood........

I may possibly be getting repetitive, but I really love my old photos, they are my most prized possessions and I often get out the old boxes and go through them, especially those of me and my mum. Whenever I waver and feel uncertain about my choice of vocation, I think of the everlasting nature of photography and it always puts me back on track.

I gave away a photo shoot for Mothers day this year. There are so many reasons a photographer should NEVER do this, but I wanted to turn my moody funk about mothers day into something positive and GIVE a gift to another mother. Some of these pics are in this post below. Thanks Rachel! You helped me so much and you didnt even know it.

Those that know me well (even if you read my blog) will know that this is the first Mothers Day without my gorgeous mum. We were very close and I felt like I lost my compass when she died. Although I am getting my balance back, I won't lie, its hard to even walk past the newsagent at the moment with all of the Mothers Day paraphernalia around. Deep breath, walk on!

I used to spend as long as it took to find the perfect mothers day card for my mum and try to make the day as lovely for her as I could. I can't help feeling like I am missing out, a little bit ripped off. I'm not even going to be in the country on Sunday and I've been totally ok with that.

On the brightest side possible, I am constantly and happily reminded that I too am a mother and this day is for me too.

My very loving and very wise husband moved mothers day for me this year and we had a great time as a family. When my 6yr old asked him why we even have Mothers Day, he quickly responded that every day should be mothers day because mummy does so much for you. Once again proving that my smartest choice ever was to marry him. I must remember to reciprocate on Fathers Day, or perhaps make sure that every day is also Fathers Day.

To every mother I know, I truly hope you enjoy your day and that you cherish every moment.

Happy 100th Birthday Canberra

Yes, here in our Nations Capital we are having a little (big) celebration. Canberra is 100.

I am no historian so you'll have to google it if you want the history, or just visit http://www.canberra100.com.au and that website will tell you all about it. One of the best things about this event for me is the gaziliion photographic opportunities.

Enlighten Canberra happens every year. Someone, somewhere decided it would be a great idea to project images on some of our major iconic buildings and make them look even more spectacular for a week every year. And they do!

This finishes on Saturday this week so get on down there if you'd like to see it. (Oh and its free!) Go Canberra.

Farewell 2012........

This will be my last blog post for 2012 as I try to wind down for a brief holiday with my family. For me, this year has been up and down, a mixed bag, a rollercoaster, any number of cliches would apply. There have been far too many sad moments this year but when I look back, it has also been peppered with some pretty awesome moments and achievements. A mixed bag indeed!

I am about to clock over the 2 year mark in my business. I am very proud of myself and my family has been amazingly supportive. A big thankyou goes out to all my clients for entrusting me to capture your precious memories and thereby helping me to achieve my goals. I have even had a few repeat clients this year which is just fantastic.

Look out in the New Year for a new website design, new pricing to suit all your whims, needs and budgets, Digital SLR Photography lessons in both Brisbane and Canberra, a renewed focus on Kids and Couples and of course, dont forget to let me know if any of you are getting married. Check out www.kandtweddings.com for some fabulous wedding photography options.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and hope that 2013 is the best year for you yet.

with Love..............(and a few pics from a recent session)

Paying it Forward

A giveaway from my heart. Please read on.......

I am so very fortunate in this life and the Christmas season is my favourite time of year. I have amazing, kind and genuine friends and family and I live a wonderful town in a lovely house. I have my health and I am loved. I am blessed.

I have been thinking of ways to ensure I don't forget the less fortunate or those that may be struggling at this time of year and ways to give back and show my thanks to the powers of our universe. I received an invitation from www.payitforwardmississippi.com and could not see how could I refuse this request?

As part of this global initiative I am offering a free photoshoot for a family or an individual that may have had a rough go this year, someone that may be struggling from an illness or loss, or a community hero that needs some recognition. We hope to capture beautiful memories for these families or this person that may brighten their holiday season, as well as brightening mine by giving back.

I wish I could do this for everyone (honestly! I truly love what I do and believe in capturing moments in time forever. Everyone should have such an opportunity) but alas, I can only afford to offer 1 session.

The chosen family or person will receive receive a photoshoot, 10 digital high res files on a disk, a 16×20 print, 2 – 8×10′s, and 3- 5×7′s.

Please email any submissions to me at katrina@katrinaedgarphotography.com before Friday December 14th. I am a little late of the mark for a Christmas Present but I will work with the chosen person to book a session at a time that suits them very soon.

Merry Christmas to all. xoxoxo

Happy.......... + an awesome dog

Sometimes in my job, I get to meet families that are just so lovely and obviously happy that I cant help but come away from a session feeling just a little bit happier. That old warm and fuzzy feeling takes over. Another awesome part of my work. I love helping them to create lasting memories. The term M.F.E.O (made for each other) was spoken out loud. Lucky couple, lucky kids. *sigh*

Have I told you lately how much I love this work?

If you book a session with me, you are welcome to bring your dog. Dogs are awesome. :)

Back in the swing.......of Spring.

Someone reminded me recently of the multitude of pretty awesome things that come with my chosen profession. I dont often need reminding but I admit Ihave been submerged in accounts and tax time and the many and varied responsibilities of a small business owner.

I have to say that by far the best thing is that on these glorious Canberra mornings I get to wander our beautiful landscapes taking photos of gorgeous, happy kids and families. Not bad at all!

Spring has definitely sprung!

Cheeky Chops and Booboo......

I have had a little/big break for the last few weeks. I needed a holiday with my family and it was an added bonus to go to Perth and see one of my best friends with her new house and her growing family.

My dear friend has gorgeous children, so its a photogs dream to have them as 'models'. I LOVE them!! Like an Aunty that lives too far away, I miss them too. They are rambunctious, willful and loving kids. The youngest, gorgeous little monster is 1 now and there arent many photos of her.............until now ;)

( My munchkins are in here too, as if you havent seen enough of them. )

Thanks again Mr & Mrs Smith. It's all fun and games until someone loses a tooth.

Happy Friday everyone. x

My mum was like Google...............(a personal blog post)

Yep! Thats me giving my mum rabbit ears (circa 1986)For me, my mum was like Google.

Its true and not in the way that 'all mums know best', she really did know a lot of stuff. She was university educated, street smart, pragmatic and always had an honest answer to any dilemma.

I used to call her for the simplest thing.

When I realised at 30 years of age that I didn't know how long to boil an egg to make it just right for little soldiers (sad, I know), or when I needed to know how to cool down my food safely so I didn't poison my family with leftovers? What size picture hook should I buy? Where, when or if I needed to put water in my car? How long to cook a sausage or a roast? How to treat my daughters febrile convulsions (thank god she was there!)

She knew everything or could find the answer.

Her answers were almost always scientific, as she was a scientist, but that just made me trust her even more. When I asked her about God and who 'she' was, mum answered me with a long but practical response that was the perfect compromise between Darwinism and Faith, but still kept my childish ideals of angels and heaven in tact. The full story is for another blog post one day.

My mum just passed away, at age 63. Ironically, her brain was the first part of her body to fail her. What will I do without her?

Well the answer to that, for me, is simple. (very very hard to face and emotional, but still simple) I will remember that she has left an amazing legacy. 4 children, 11 grandchildren, life saving medical research, many of my lifes lessons and the way I view this world come from her.

I will pass on to my young daughters, that will never get the chance to know their amazing Grandma, all the things she taught me. I will keep my brain working and I will look in the mirror and see her smile, her nose, her chin, her frizzy ridiculous hair, her hands and yes…….….her awful, very wide and boney feet (thanks mum).

I will hear her voice in my head, encouraging me, letting me make mistakes but always the voice of reason. I will try to be that way too.

They don't know it but my Mum and Dad are the reasons I am a photographer. They took photos and kept everyone of them. They are now film and slides and grainy old prints but I have them all. I can see my face and that of my kids in the faces of those that came before us. My mum is gone but I have 1000 photos of her to keep close when I need to see her face or show my kids.

The inspiration for what I do is always there in the red storage box in my wardrobe.

These are just some of the important things my most loved mumma taught me……………….

  • You should always expect the best in your life, even though it is true that you won't always get it. If you aim high, you will always achieve greater heights than those that expect to fail.
  • You can have and do anything you want, just not all at once. So make a list and tick it off as you go.
  • Your kids are a reflection of you and will love you even if they have cause not to. Raising them is your most important job so you should try not to stuff it up!
  • Being poor or unemployed or stressed is crappy. She was all of these things at some stage, but you are the only person that can change your circumstance. So don't whinge if you don't do something, because its up to you.
  • Never be limited by what others think of you. Have faith that you 'can' as long as you believe it in your heart.
  • Mum is really always right.
  • Illness and death are not the end. Your life's legacy lives on when you're gone, so make it count.
  • Everyone is made of water, carbon and a few other chemicals but we are basically all the same. Race, religion, skin or hair colour make no difference in the end. We are all the same.

I miss you mum. I will miss you everyday.

A message for a teenage girl...........

This week we had a house guest. I love her very very much........which is lucky because shes a teenager. Ha ha ha.....

But seriously now, I have never met a 13year old that truly loves themselves and realises their self-worth. They all seem to be on a journey to somewhere, to do something that they dont even understand themselves.

I (vaguely!) remember being 13 and I mainly remember being a little confused and a bit needy but most of all craving an independence I wasnt ready for - but of course I didnt know that at the time.

If I could talk to my teenage self, I would make sure she understood that she really could do or be ANYTHING and to never limit herself within the expectations of others.

If I was more articulate, creative and insightful, I would write the following (but I'm not so I'll quote A. A. Milne)

Dear Tilly, my message for you is this.

As Christopher Robin says to Winnie the Pooh

"Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think."

Love forever, Aunty K xo

Brisbane...........Love

As many may know, I lived in Brisbane for many many years and I am lucky enough to get the chance to visit for work and for play often. On my last visit I had the pleasure of meeting this crazy, awesome, fun, lovable kid and catch up with his mumma, a friend of many many years.

Although it is true that it takes a village to raise a child (and this boy has an awesome village!), its also true that a really great mum with lots and lots of love is the best start you can get.........

Happy Tuesday everyone. xo

So so sorry.......

On May 26th I was asked to fill in for an amazing Canberra based Event Photographer (only because he was out of town...............lucky me!) at the National Sorry Day Committee Community Event. I was thrilled to take part and humbled by the stories of the Stolen Generation. I wish we would all shout our apologies from every roof top and I wish the offical apology had happened much much sooner.

Our indigenous culture is close to my heart. I have family who are indigenous and my amazing mother spent a lot of her scientific career in the pursuit of improved health outcomes for urban Aborigines.

Please go to http://www.nsdc.org.au/ for more information on events in your community.

A big shout out and thanks to fellow photog Luke Kneale (http://www.luke-k.com/)

I wondering what she's whispering?.........

2 and 3 year olds can be challenging in a photo shoot - free will reigns supreme! That being said, they are my favourite 'models'. You cant force anything out of them, nor would you want to. They'll smile or laugh if they want to, or not!

Its always fun, a bit of exercise and a lesson in going with the flow. This particular toddler and her new little brother are totally, utterly adorable so I have to share...................Happy weekend all. xoxoxoxo
