Beautiful Autumn in Canberra

I have had a very busy rollercoaster few months and its about time my poor neglected blog got some attention :)

I love Autumn in Canberra. It has always been my favourite time of the year but the gorgeous colours and the atmosphere of the town at this time of the year feels a little magical to me.

I was lucky enough to photograph this lovely family for the second time last week. You may recognise this gorgeous boy from my blog last year but their beautiful girl was just a sleepy bubba in pink back then. Heres a few images from last weekends morning session at Lennox Gardens.

Happy Weekend friends ......K x

Perhaps I need more beads?

When I have a lovely family portrait session booked in the woods somewhere and it rains that morning, my heart sinks just a little. Sometimes it’s awesome and there's a lot of splashing and playing and mud - kids paradise - but mostly its just wet. That didn’t stop these gorgeous kiddies running amok.

You may notice the ubiquitous 'beads' are back. Maybe I should mix it up a little and buy some new ones.

Dear Stella.....

Dear Stella,

We have just left you at 'big school' for the very first time and your mummy and daddy are very proud. You are so excited to be at school and there were no tears in sight. Well not from you anyway.

This day marks a milestone in your life that is bittersweet for parents like us. You are our first born girl and the last 5 years seem to have flown by in a heartbeat. You are no longer a baby or even a toddler. You are a big girl, and you tell us so every chance you get. Please forgive us if we don't always agree, you look so little in that big school dress.

We hope that you always look forward to school as much as you did today and that you love it as much as we did. No matter what anyone says, please remember School is COOL!

It will be hard sometimes and you will be tired or confused too but it will also be so much fun, amazing and inspirational. Your mum and dad, your little sister, your teacher, your family and your friends will always be with you along this amazing journey.

All our love

Mum and Dad xx

Watch me grow..........

It is always nice to be asked back to update the family pics and catch up with previous clients.

You may remember Elliot. He's now 6 months old and I have had the pleasure of taking his photo as a bump, a new bub and now halfway through his first year. SO CUTE! Those eyes are divine and his facial expressions crack me up! What fun.

Blogging my holidays....

I have to admit to being kind of a old fashioned girl when it comes to Christmas. I love seafood on Christmas Eve and the traditional meal on Christmas Day. My hubby and I wrap every present individually, even if its part of a set so it feels like you get a present bonanza on Christmas morning.

I even made Pyjamas for my kids and their 'little' cousins to wear on Christmas night (Thanks to my very crafty and talented Sister-in-law for that idea).

I love to watch my kids slightly sleepy looking faces light up when they set eyes on the 'Santa Sacks'  full of goodies and YES, they have chocolate for breakfast.

The inevitable looming family drama never seems to be as dramatic as the memory of the years gone by and things just seem to cruise along until you are stuffed full of food and just a tad sleepy.

We spent this years Christmas with my family in Brisbane and we caught up with some old BFF's. Champagne flows freely (only good stuff though) and life is good, simple and lovely.

The second part of our break was spent on the NSW South Coast at our favourite family spot. Beautiful clean waters, no crowds - well not compared to beaches in Sydney or QLD - and some fun family time. We celebrated the New Year with more champagne (what else), watching fireworks on telly while the kids snored. 12.10am and we were snoring too.

Such is the life of my young family and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

While at the beach I left my trusty camera at home and relied on the iPhone for my pics. Not too shabby for a telephone and a little bit of Instagram.

Happy 2012 to everyone.

How will you capture this year? It will never come again. Get out your camera and record the moments. Or call me and I'll do it for you ;)

Snakes and snails and puppy dogs tails......

Isnt that what little boys are made of? Not these boys.

These boys are loads of fun and bundles of energy. 2 of these boys just happen to be my gorgeous nephews and all the others are their cousins so I guess they are part of my extended family too. Thats what Christmas is about after all.

Get those cameras out!! Many many photo ops are on the way. You can never replace a Christmas happy snap. Our kids are only little for such a short time.

Merry Christmas to everyone. I wish you a happy, loving and peaceful 2012.

Enjoy! I know I will xoxo

Last Sunday....

Last Sunday I was tired and it was raining but I hauled myself out of bed for an early morning photo session with this lovely family. By the end of the hour I was in a great mood. Lots of smiles, a beautiful family with 2 happy little girls in their lovely home. There are worse ways to start the day :) xo

I love the light!!

We are very blessed to have such beautiful morning light in Canberra at this time of year, its almost a shame to sleep in (almost!.......I wish).

Freshly manicured for QEII on her visit to OZ, the grounds near the Governor Generals House and the Royal Canberra Golf Club, are beautiful. The perfect place for this 3 year old little girl to run around. And boy, did she run.

As they say, thank heavens for little girls. xx

Beautiful baby boys....love x2

As a mum of two gorgeous girls, I always find it fun and fascinating when there are boys in a portrait session. As obvious as it sounds, they are just........different! Different in a great fun, busy and sometimes challenging kind of way. Now this gorgeous boy has a new baby brother and that is very very special indeed.

Beautiful Fiji

I have just returned from a week in gorgeous WARM Fiji with my girls and Hubby. It was too short, too fabulous and too hard too leave.

My girls rediscovered their love of the water after a particularly frosty Canberra Winter and many winter germies that prevented water play. My 2 year old is so enthusiastic about the water that she oftens forgets she cant swim yet. Relaxing? Not really when you cant sit still for fear of her drowning...........super fun for all the family? Absolutely. Here's just a few happy snaps.....

A little context with this one. Massive tantrum, in the middle of the crowded pool side bar......until the food and drinks arrive...... Did I smell chippies?

If they can dance, so can I. She ran out into the stage area and had a boogie, the star attraction.

Fairies at the bottom of our garden........

My dad has been a grandad for a little over 21 years now but his grandkids have lived far away, until the latest few were born, mine included. Now we have moved closer to him he has had the chance to get involved a little more. We all love it. He has collected a bunch of 'pretty things' for my girls over the last few months and last weekend he created this small world of fun for my girls in my otherwise untended garden (and I use the term 'garden' very loosely)................Thanks Dad, from me and my girls xxx

Digital files or negatives? What is their value?

   VS

I often get asked why it costs a lot to buy digital files of images from a photographer and the reality is, you may get a different answer from every photographer you ask. My position on this topic is fairly simple, however long winded, and it goes a little something like this……..

In the age of Facebook, digital photo frames and Apple TV (love!), I totally appreciate there is a high demand for digital images. My house is certainly full of them, as I know are many of yours. The screensaver of photos on my computer is often a topic of post-dinner conversation with guests and family alike.

I also know a whole lot of people that love the traditional framed photo or the more contemporary canvas art and have them plaster on walls and every flat surface above floor level. I sit somewhere in between………...I love both. (Funny that!) but I could never replace a printed photo with its digital form.

As a photographer, my job is to make my customers happy.

What do you come to me for?

I think this is again, fairly simple. I provide my clients with beautiful images they cannot take themselves, in a high quality medium, for the purpose they intend. So why not sell the digital files too?

The issue is often this – Perceived Value.

We all have pc’s and digi cameras so a file seems quite cheap and cheerful. However, a digital file is the basis of the photographer’s product. And like any other product has an inherent value. It also carries risk for us. If we sell you a file on the cheap, you get a poor quality print out from a photo kiosk and put it on your wall, it is still seen as our product. Word of mouth is powerful.

There is also the precious time its takes to edit and process your images. An often forgotten but necessary and occasionally time-consuming part of the process. This cannot be free! How would we eat?

There is the inescapable truth that photography is an expensive business to begin with. It is impossible to ignore the 10’s of thousands of dollars in equipment, insurances, general running costs, taxes (ah tax!), printing costs, industry memberships, travel expenses……the list grows and grows……

For a photographer to be a photographer, we need to pay for all these things and more to provide you a service, otherwise, we would never begin.

Personally I think, if you go to the trouble of having professional photos taken, why not get some prints?

It is art in itself, it is your family, your mum or dad, kids, and is worth putting on display. I really don’t see the point in only buying a disc. You are capturing a moment in your lives that will never happen again, so you should have the memory on your wall, or on your desk.

This is why I always encourage my customers to purchase prints and I include one print with every portrait session. It’s something tangible, in your hand that you don’t have to press a button to view.

I am always happy to package in a disc that contains digital images for my customers and combine it with beautiful printed images for you to brag about and remember forever.

Please contact me if you want more information.

Milestones and mixed emotions......

The big-girls-bed has had mixed results but one thing is for certain, they grow up faster than you'd like. I am trying not to wish it away and enjoy my kids while they are young.

I wil leave you with some images of another lovely family that seems to be growing fast and changing everyday. Thanks for asking me into your home Vanessa and Eric. What a wonderful family.

Happy Friday everyone!!

Sensing a theme?.............bbbrrrrrrr....

If there was a way to type the sound of my teeth chattering I would! It is really cold here in our Nations Capital. 4 degrees at 1pm.

Lucky for me I have a centrally heated office, right next to George (as in Clooney........my coffee machine) and these gorgeous pics of some beautiful kids to warm my heart. Schmultzy I know....but its true!

Yep, still loving it people. Have a GREAT Friday and a wonderful weekend.
