What to wear for your family portrait session?

I get asked this question all the time and in my humble opinion, there is no definitive answer.

The are however, a few things that its worth considering before your session date arrives.

1.     Is it comfortable?

This is the No. 1 most important question, especially when children are involved in the session. If its not comfortable then you will see it in the photos and remember that feeling from the day. This is not what you want to remember. You want to remember the fun, the moment, the love, not the zip that dug into your rib.

2.     Is it Flattering?

Be objective; ask someone who will be honest. Anything that is too puffy or flowing will not be flattering on most people. It may make you seem bigger than you are. Conversely, anything too tight will do the same. Clothes that fit you properly will help people focus on the important part of the image – the face. Ask yourself, “Who is the subject? The clothing or the person?” As a general rule, long sleeves are more flattering than short ones.

3.     Do you Hair and Makeup as usual.

There is no need for ‘extra’. Remember Comfort is No.1 and if you feel silly or out of character, you wont be comfortable.

If you really want some direction, these would be my tips;

·      Choose a colour palette with one majority colour that everyone will have on. Add on 1 or 2 other colours that are complimentary

·      Black and Navy are great base colours for photos.

·      All black or white is not good unless everyone is wearing it.

·      Avoid crazy patterns and thin stripes (big thick stripes are better if that’s your thing)

·      If someone must be in a pattern or colour, make it the kids. Colour or patterns that are dramatically different from anyone else’s clothing will draw attention, and sometimes that good.

·      Bright colours take attention away from the face.

·      Dark footwear is best (unless it’s a photo on the beach, then just kick off your shoes)

·      If getting a haircut or new hairdo, make your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to your portrait session

 Once you've read this and had a short think about it over a cuppa, just don't worry! You will all look fabulous as long as you are happy on the day.
